Biyangdo Island Jeju: 2026 Ferry Schedule, Fares and Family Walking Guide
Biyangdo Island Jeju is a small volcanic island off Jeju’s northwest coast, about 15 minutes by ferry from Hallim Port. You can walk the entire island in about an hour, see rare lava formations up close, and enjoy wide views back to Jeju’s main island. Most visitors spend around two hours there.
Koreans call it “the island within an island.” On a family trip around Jeju, we set aside one afternoon for Biyangdo Island Jeju with our two kids. It turned out to be one of the calmest and most surprising few hours of the whole trip.
This guide covers the Biyangdo ferry schedule, fares, ticket rules, the best things to do in Biyangdo, and practical tips for families and first-time visitors.

1) Which Biyangdo? There Are Two
Jeju actually has two islands called Biyangdo. This guide covers Biyangdo Island Jeju off Hallim on the west coast. The other Biyangdo is a tiny islet next to Udo on the east coast, and it is connected to Udo by a bridge.
When you search a map app or tell a taxi driver where you are going, ask for “Hallim Port, Biyangdo ferry” (한림항 비양도). That way you will not end up on the opposite side of Jeju.

2) Why Visit Biyangdo Island Jeju?
Biyangdo Island Jeju is not a big-name landmark like Seongsan Ilchulbong. Its charm is quieter. The island has no traffic and no crowds, just a small fishing village, red volcanic soil, and a coastal path lined with strange black rocks.
For kids, it works like a small outdoor volcano museum. For adults, it is a peaceful walk with the sea on one side and Jeju on the horizon.
2. Biyangdo Island Jeju Ferry Schedule, Fares and Tickets
Before visiting Biyangdo Island Jeju, check two things first: the weather and the ferry times. Boats are small, and sailings are cancelled when the wind is strong.

1) Biyangdo Ferry Schedule
Two separate ferry companies sail from Hallim Port: the Biyangdo-ho and the Cheonnyeon-ho. Each one runs its own timetable.

| Ferry | Departs Hallim Port | Departs Biyangdo |
|---|---|---|
| Biyangdo-ho | 09:20, 11:20, 13:20, 15:20 | 09:35, 11:35, 13:35, 15:35 |
| Cheonnyeon-ho | 09:00, 12:00, 14:00, 15:30 | 09:15, 12:15, 14:15, 15:45 |
Times can change by season and weather. Treat this Biyangdo ferry schedule as a guide, and confirm on the day of your trip.
Important: return tickets are tied to the company you sail with. If you go over on the Biyangdo-ho, you must come back on the Biyangdo-ho. Pick your return time before you pay.
We took the 13:20 Biyangdo-ho to the island and the 15:35 boat back. That gave us about two hours on Biyangdo Island Jeju. Looking back, it was exactly the right amount of time.
2) Ferry Fares (Round Trip)
| Passenger | Adult | Child (age 2–11) |
|---|---|---|
| Visitors | ₩12,000 | ₩6,000 |
| Jeju residents | ₩10,000 | ₩5,000 |
Adults need a valid ID to board. Foreign travelers should carry their passport, because a photo of it may not be accepted.
3) How to Buy Tickets at Hallim Port
There is no online booking for Biyangdo Island Jeju ferries. Tickets are sold on the day at the Hallim Port ferry waiting room (한림항 도선대합실).
Here is how it works:
- Go to the ferry waiting room at Hallim Port.
- Fill in a short boarding form at the table.
- Show your ID and pay at the counter.
- Board when your ferry is called.
To check whether boats are running, call on the morning of your visit. The numbers are Biyangdo-ho 064-796-3515 and Cheonnyeon-ho 064-796-7522.

4) On the Boat
The crossing to Biyangdo Island Jeju takes only about 15 minutes. Even so, our kids were thrilled just to be on a boat, and they spent the whole ride glued to the window.
Seats are not assigned, so board as early as you can to get a good spot. Most people will not need seasickness pills for such a short trip. Still, the boat can rock now and then when the waves pick up.
5) Getting to Hallim Port and Where to Eat
Hallim Port is on the northwest coast of Jeju, roughly an hour’s drive from Jeju City and the airport. It is also a short taxi ride from Hyeopjae Beach.
There are only a few places to eat on Biyangdo Island Jeju, so it is smart to have lunch near the port first. We had a quick lunch at a restaurant close to the ferry terminal before boarding. [INTERNAL LINK: Kongmaru Sundubu Jjamppong — lunch near Hallim Port]

3. Things to Do in Biyangdo
The island is small, and the main coastal road makes a simple loop. Here are the best things to do on Biyangdo Island Jeju, in roughly the order you will reach them from the pier.
1) Read the Information Boards at the Pier
They say you see more when you know more. That is true here. Right at the arrival pier, illustrated boards introduce the island’s landmarks, volcanic features and village shrines, including the grandmother and grandfather shrines, Pearlangmot Pond and the hornito.
The boards are drawn in a simple cartoon style. Our kids read every panel on their own. Spend five minutes here, and the rest of Biyangdo Island Jeju becomes much more interesting.

2) Red Volcanic Soil
One of the first things you notice on Biyangdo Island Jeju is the deep red ground. The color comes from volcanic ash and lava rich in iron oxide.
Along the path, one bank has been cut open so you can see the red layers inside. It almost feels like it was designed as a hands-on science lesson.

3) Elephant Rock
Our kids spotted this one before we did. “It’s an elephant!” they shouted. Sure enough, this large coastal rock looks just like an elephant dipping its trunk into the sea.

4) Views of Jeju and the Sinchang Windmills
From the coastal path, look across the water. You will see the white wind turbines of Sinchang Windmill Coastal Road, one of Jeju’s best-known driving routes. Further along the trail, the whole coastline of Jeju’s main island spreads out in front of you.
These open sea views are one of the simple pleasures of Biyangdo Island Jeju.

5) Biyangdo Hornito, the “Baby-Carrying Rock”
This was the spot our kids found most fascinating. The famous hornito on Biyangdo Island Jeju looks like a mother carrying a baby on her back. Locals call it the “baby-carrying rock” (애기업은돌).
A hornito is a small chimney-like mound. It forms when hot lava and gas burst out through an opening in a lava flow and pile up around it. Do not miss this one; it is the island’s signature sight.

6) Pearlangmot Pond
Pearlangmot is a small brackish wetland. Seawater seeps in and out through the rocks, and the trapped water stays behind like a pond. It is a quiet, unusual stop on the loop, and one of the few salt-water ponds you can see on Biyangdo Island Jeju.

7) Cactus Fruit and Shell-Lined Stone Walls
Look for the purple fruit of the Opuntia cactus (baeknyeoncho). This is the same fruit used in Jeju’s popular cactus chocolate souvenirs, and it was our first time seeing it growing.
Near the village, some stone walls are decorated with colorful seashells. They make a pretty final stretch of the Biyangdo Island Jeju loop back to the pier.
4. Tips for Visiting Biyangdo Island Jeju
1) Bike Rental: Do You Need One?
Bikes are available near the pier. We paid attention to the prices: about ₩5,000 for a single bike and ₩10,000 for a tandem.

Our older child wanted to ride, but our younger one did not. In the end we skipped the bikes, and we did not miss them. Biyangdo Island Jeju is small enough to walk around in about an hour, even at a slow pace. Walking also lets you stop at every rock and viewpoint.
2) How Long to Stay
Two hours is the sweet spot. That covers the coastal loop, photo stops and a short rest before the return ferry.
If you want to climb Biyangbong, the volcanic peak with a lighthouse on top, plan for extra time.
3) Practical Checklist
- Call ahead on the morning of your visit to confirm sailings.
- Carry your passport. Adults cannot board without ID.
- Bring water and snacks, especially with kids. Shops on Biyangdo Island Jeju are limited.
- Wear comfortable shoes. The path is easy, but volcanic rocks are uneven.
- Watch the clock. Note your return time and stick to it.
4) Make It a Jeju Island Day Trip
Biyangdo pairs well with nearby west-coast sights. Spend the morning at Hyeopjae Beach or Hallim Park, have lunch near Hallim Port, then take an afternoon boat to Biyangdo Island Jeju. It makes an easy, relaxed Jeju island day trip, especially with children.

5) A Little History
Biyangdo Island Jeju is often described as Jeju’s youngest volcanic island. Records describe an eruption around the year 1002, which makes it one of the few islands whose birth was written down. The name means “flying island,” and it was once known as Jukdo, or “bamboo island.”
