Fukuoka Live Squid Restaurant: Genkai Wakashiomaru Munakata Guide
If you’re looking for a genuine Fukuoka live squid restaurant experience away from the crowds of Hakata, Genkai Wakashiomaru (玄海 若潮丸) in Munakata is worth the detour. Run by a local fisherman and his family, this Fukuoka fisherman-run restaurant serves squid, fish, and shellfish pulled straight from tanks in the dining room — including the restaurant’s signature dish, live squid sashimi (ikizukuri) that’s still moving when it reaches your table.
We stopped here for lunch after visiting Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, on our way to check in at the Mercure Fukuoka Munakata Resort & Spa. If your itinerary includes a night in Munakata, this restaurant makes an excellent lunch or dinner stop before or after your hotel check-in.

About Genkai Wakashiomaru
Genkai Wakashiomaru is a fisherman-run restaurant specializing in seafood caught in the Genkai Sea, the body of water off Fukuoka Prefecture’s northern coast. As one of the most talked-about Munakata seafood spots on Tripadvisor and Tabelog, it keeps live squid, horse mackerel, flatfish, turban shell, and abalone in large tanks near the entrance and prepares everything to order, so nothing is sitting in a display case or shipped in from a wholesale market. That tank-to-table model is the main reason this restaurant has built a loyal following among locals — and it’s also what makes it stand out among Fukuoka live squid restaurant options for visiting travelers.
Inside, seating is split between counter seats, regular tables, and tatami-mat rooms divided by partitions — a comfortable setup for families traveling with kids. A wall near the entrance is covered in autographs from visiting celebrities, a quiet sign of how long this restaurant has been a fixture in the local dining scene.
Near the entrance, a handwritten board lists what’s been caught and what’s available that day. On our visit, two popular set menus were already sold out by early afternoon, and a sign noted that the live squid set requires a minimum of two orders per table. It’s a working fisherman’s restaurant where the day’s catch, not a printed menu, decides what’s served — and it shows in the reviews: it currently sits as the top-rated restaurant in Munakata on Tripadvisor (4.2/5 from local and international visitors).

Where to Find It
Address: 528-1 Eguchi, Munakata, Fukuoka 811-3502, Japan
The restaurant sits in Munakata City, roughly an hour’s drive from central Fukuoka. That distance makes it impractical as a special dining trip from downtown Fukuoka on its own, but it lines up well if:
- You’re driving between Dazaifu and Munakata (or the Genkai coast) and want a lunch stop along the way
- You’re staying at a hotel in Munakata, such as the Mercure Fukuoka Munakata Resort & Spa, and want a nearby dinner or lunch option
- You’re road-tripping along the Genkai Sea coastline and want fresh, tank-raised seafood rather than a roadside chain restaurant
Parking is available directly in front of the building, so arriving by car is straightforward.

Hours, Reservations, and Getting a Table
Genkai Wakashiomaru is closed on Tuesdays (if a Tuesday falls on a public holiday, the restaurant closes the following day instead). On other days, it runs a split lunch-and-dinner schedule on weekdays and stays open through the afternoon on weekends:
- Weekdays: 11:00–15:30 (last order 15:00) and 17:00–20:30 (last order 20:00)
- Weekends and Sundays: 11:00–20:30 (last order 20:00), no midday break
This is a popular spot with local families, and it does not reliably take walk-ins — we arrived at 12:50 without a reservation and weren’t seated until around 1:30 PM. If you’re visiting with kids or during lunch or dinner peak hours, call ahead or book online through Hot Pepper Gourmet.

What to Order
Live Squid Set (Ikizukuri Teishoku)
This is the dish that defines Genkai Wakashiomaru and the reason most visitors search for a Fukuoka live squid restaurant in the first place. Squid is pulled from the tank after you order, prepared tableside, and served while the body is still moving — a striking presentation the first time you see it. The texture is noticeably different from pre-cut squid sashimi: firm, almost crisp, with a natural sweetness. Note that this set typically requires a minimum order of two servings. Once you’ve finished the sashimi, the restaurant fries the remaining tentacles into crispy squid tempura, so you get two textures and preparations from a single order.

Sushi Set (Sushi Teishoku)
A milder, kid-friendly option built around nigiri sushi — shrimp, whitefish, grilled eel, and tamagoyaki (Japanese omelet) — served alongside salad, soup, and chawanmushi (savory egg custard). It’s a well-rounded, good-value set for anyone who wants a break from raw squid.

Drinks
Kirin Ichiban Shibori draft beer is available, along with a well-stocked shelf of Fukuoka-brewed shochu and sake behind the counter if you’re not driving afterward.

The Live Squid Experience
Watching live squid prepared and served tableside can be a lot for first-time visitors, especially children — ours initially felt sorry for the squid before curiosity (and taste) won out. The squid’s body will still be moving slightly when it arrives; that’s a normal part of the presentation, not a sign of anything wrong.

Once the surprise wears off, the texture is what stands out — translucent, faintly sweet, and noticeably firmer than pre-sliced squid sashimi served elsewhere. Our kids, the most hesitant at the table, ended up eating most of it themselves. Once the sashimi is finished, the kitchen fries the remaining tentacles into squid tempura and brings it out as a second course, so one order becomes two dishes with different textures.

Nearby: What Else Is Around Munakata
Munakata City is best known internationally for Munakata Taisha, a Shinto shrine complex tied to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed “Sacred Island of Okinoshima” site, a short drive away. The Michi-no-Eki Munakata roadside station, one of Japan’s highest-grossing roadside markets, is also nearby and worth a stop.
For travelers overnighting in the area, the Mercure Fukuoka Munakata Resort & Spa is a convenient base — Genkai Wakashiomaru works well as a lunch stop before check-in or dinner afterward.
Prices
Based on our visit, an order for four people (two live squid sets, two sushi sets, and one draft beer) came to roughly ¥9,930 before tax. Individual set prices at the time of our visit:
- Live squid set: ¥3,300 per person (minimum two servings)
- Sushi set: ¥1,320 per person
- Draft beer (medium): ¥690

Prices are subject to change — see the notes below for verification details.
Tips for Visiting With Family
- Book ahead, especially for weekend lunch — tatami seating with partitions works well for groups with children
- Ask for wasabi to be served separately on the kids’ sushi set if needed
- If the live squid presentation might be too intense for younger children, the sushi set is a solid fallback that can be ordered alongside it
- This is a genuine local fisherman’s restaurant, not a tourist-oriented one — expect handwritten menu boards and no English signage
- If the wait becomes an issue with younger kids, plan your reservation around nap or snack times
FAQ
Is Genkai Wakashiomaru easy to reach without a car?
It’s most practical by car, with parking directly in front of the restaurant. Public transit options from central Fukuoka are limited and add significant travel time, so this restaurant works best as part of a driving itinerary through Munakata or the Genkai coast.
Do I need a reservation?
Yes, a reservation is strongly recommended, particularly for lunch or dinner on weekends or with a group. Walk-ins may face a 30–40 minute wait or may not be seated at peak times.
What makes this different from other Fukuoka live squid restaurants?
The restaurant is directly run by a local fisherman, and the squid, mackerel, and shellfish served are kept alive in tanks on-site rather than sourced through a market, which is reflected in both freshness and price.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes — tatami seating and a dedicated sushi/kids set make it workable for families, though the live squid presentation itself may be intense for younger kids at first.
How far is it from central Fukuoka or Hakata Station?
Roughly an hour’s drive, which makes it impractical as a standalone trip from downtown Fukuoka but a natural stop if you’re already heading toward Munakata, Dazaifu, or the Genkai coastline.
Is English spoken at the restaurant?
No English menu or signage should be expected — this is a local, fisherman-run restaurant rather than a tourist-oriented one. Pointing at the handwritten menu board or using a translation app works fine, and reservations can be made by phone or through Hot Pepper Gourmet’s online booking.
